I'll be honest: Dajti wasn't my favourite national park. Known locally as the "Balcony of Tirana," it sits just 26 kilometres east of the Albanian capital, and that proximity shows. The area around the top of the cable car feels more like a city park than a wilderness, with families having picnics, kids running around on the large open grassy spaces, and a cluster of restaurants, cafés, and gift shops. If you're expecting untouched nature the moment you step off the cable car, you'll need to adjust your expectations.

That said, it has its merits, and if you walk just 10 minutes beyond the tourist section, the crowds thin out fast. The trails become quieter, the landscape opens up, and you're into genuinely solitary territory with views stretching out across the mountains. This is also where there's a real chance of spotting European brown bears, which are present in the park alongside wolves, wildcats, and red foxes. Forty-four mammal species and 143 bird species have been recorded here, so the biodiversity is there if you're willing to go and find it.

Getting there

The main draw for access is the Dajti Ekspres cable car, the longest in the Balkans at over four kilometres. The 15-minute ride up from the eastern edge of Tirana is worth doing regardless, as the views over the city, the surrounding countryside, and out towards the Adriatic are excellent. You can also reach the top by road, or walking, but the cable car is the better experience.

At the top

Once you arrive, the area around the upper station is busy and well set up for families. There's an information point, restaurants, a gift shop, and plenty of open space for children to run around in. It's a good spot for a family day out if that's what you're after. Beyond the main area, the hiking trails fan out across the mountain and should not be underestimated. They range from gentle walks to more demanding routes, and the trail up to Tujani Peak rewards you with sweeping views over Lake Bovilla and the Tirana highlands.

Why it's worth considering

Dajti isn't a park I'd travel specifically to visit, but if you're already in Tirana, it's an easy and enjoyable half-day trip. The cable car ride alone justifies the visit, and if you push past the tourist zone at the top, there's a wilder, quieter side to the mountain waiting. For families especially, the combination of accessible open space, food options, and the novelty of the cable car makes it a solid choice.
